I’m sure you’ve heard of Turmeric powder the spice, right? Well, it’s kind of awesome! It has all kinds of great benefits like reducing inflammation and cancer-fighting properties. Joint pain relief is what we wanted to use for. <– that “we” would be me and my dog 😉
I found the Golden Paste recipe online from Dr. Doug English DVM and decided it was definitely worth a shot! I have had back surgery for scoliosis myself so I decided if I was going to make it, I should absolutely take it also. It gets mega bonus points because it requires 3 very easy things to keep on hand!
You do need to know a couple things so you get the right easy things to have on hand, though. 1st the quality of the turmeric powder is very important. It should be organic and contain 5% curcumin, this is important! I just ordered a bag from amazon (link below) and I’ll have enough to make GP (Golden Paste) for several months. 2nd the coconut oil should be an organic, cold pressed and unrefined version, it has tons of health benefits all by itself!
½ cup organic turmeric powder
1-1 1/2 cups filtered water
3 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper (Must be the black peppercorns and freshly ground. Grind them in a coffee grinder or pepper mill.)
1/3 cup organic coconut oil
Place turmeric and 1 cup of water in pan and stir until you have a thick paste. Lightly simmer 7 – 10 minutes, you’ll need to stir pretty regularly and don’t let it splash. That beautiful color isn’t so pretty when it’s splattered everywhere! You may need to add additional water along the way and if it’s a crumbly paste it will still work, no problems!
Add the pepper and oil at the end of cooking. Stir vigorously to incorporate the oil or I like to put it all in a mason jar with a lid and shake! Store in a glass jar and refrigerate – shake every 5-10 mins for 30-45 mins or until set. Check out the finished product!
Refrigerated it’s best if used within two weeks or freeze in appropriate size portions in freezer safe containers for 4-6 months.
If the oil floats on top once cooled, it just means it was not stirred/shaken enough while cooling or the mix is a bit watery, but it will not affect the performance.
Turmeric Paste aka Golden Paste has made so much a difference for me and for Oliver. I can tell a big difference in the way I feel when I take it and absolutely love it, but our whole family can see the difference in Oliver! He feels so much better that he initiates play himself with our 3-year-old dog! Usually, if she bugs him enough he’ll play for a few minutes, then he’s done but Turmeric Paste has made a huge difference in his ease of mobility made him feel young again! It along with Copaiba essential oil has let him enjoy playing and running still in his elderly dog years. That alone is worth so much to me <3
Dosage: Turmeric doesn’t stay in the body long, so it’s better to do small doses more often than a large dose once a day. Start with 1/4 tsp twice a day and work up to 1 tbsp if needed. If your schedule permits taking 3-5 times a day would be most beneficial. If upset stomach occurs, take less till adjusted.
Some (like Oliver and I) could feel the difference within a few days of adding it to our routine, others say it took a few weeks to see results.
Go make some Turmeric Paste for you and your furry friends and let me know what you think!
